I can’t count how many times I’ve searched Local Harvest since we moved here trying to find a CSA to subscribe to. I finally found one this week! Brazos River Farm is right here in town – they sell at the Farmer’s Market – but their subscription program is pretty new. I jumped at the chance for a weekly box. They are not certified organic but they are Certified Naturally Grown (CNG). From Local Harvest:
Certified Naturally Grown is an eco-label for small farmers that grow using Organic methods but have chosen NOT to become USDA certified Organic. The program includes an online application process, annual farm inspections and random pesticide residue testing to ensure consumer confidence.
When the husband found out, he was very enthusiastic. I’m so glad to have a spouse who is on the same page as I am when it comes to our food. At first he was willing to go along with whatever I wanted but over the past couple of years, he’s read Michael Pollan, he’s watched Food, Inc and has really come to see that the way things work in the industrial food supply are wrong on so many levels. The way his grandparents raised crops and cattle is not the way it’s done today.
We are both looking forward to our produce boxes which should start at the end of April. The total subscription cost $400 for four months’ worth of weekly boxes. That’s less than $25/week for local, fresh, natural produce. I know we get what we get but I sure hope Farmer Dan is going to raise cantaloupe!
